Opening Plenary Discussion and Reception, November 15, 6:00 p.m.

Human Evolution and the Changing Boundaries of Death

Dr. Gregory Stock, a U.S. biophysicist and award-winning science writer, will talk about the promise that genetic engineering holds for the evolution of our species, especially how it can enhance our intelligence and even slow down the aging process.

Dr. Grant Gillett, a New Zealand Professor of Medical Ethics and Professor of Neurosurgery, has written numerous articles about genetics and cultural reality and the moral issues surrounding self-identity and action. His views are often sought by media on issues such as stem cell research and the "right to die" debate.

Moderator: Dr. Glenys Godlovitch, Chair, Conjoint Health Research Ethics Board for the University of Calgary and the Calgary Health Region

There will be an opportunity for audience Q & A following the discussion.  A catered reception with cash bar follows.

Closing Banquet, November 17, 7:00 p.m.

Margaret Atwood

An Evening With Margaret Atwood

Margaret Atwood has been a dominant presence in the Canadian and international literary world for almost 40 years.  Drawing on her best-selling 2003 novel Oryx and Crake for inspiration, Margaret asks where genetic research could take us if we leave our compassion and ethics behind.  After her speech, Margaret will be taking questions from our delegates.
